Recomeço, por Cat Patrick

Sinopse

Quem enviou a mensagem?

No Governo?
Onde vamos chegar? Questionar já é um bom começo.

The Death Cure, by James Dashner

Synopsis
It´s the end of the line. WICKED has taken everything from Thomas: his life, his memories, and now his only friends - the Gladers. But it´s finally over. The trials are complete, after one final test. What WICKED doesn´t know is that Thomas remebers far more than they think. And it´s enough to prove that he can´t believe a word of what they say. Thomas beat the Maze. He survived the Scorch. He´ll risk anything to save his friends. But the truth might be what ends it all. The time for lies is over.

I always wondered what it would be like to find a new beginning for a humanity that chased its own destruction because of the hypocrisy and selfishness in its heart. How long could humans live for with a mentality of power that was always present throughout their whole history? How far would go their hearts to overpower their rationality? All these questions pop up in the minds of the Deth Cure´s readers. This is a dystopia and if there´s something I most like about them is how they bring us out of the box and to think of our roles in the world.
In the third book of the Maze Runner series, Thomas and his friends keep proving us how strong they are - and I don´t mean the strength we get for having muscles, but the one you conquer by being smart. They never gave up fighting against what they believed. WICKED proved to be lying and Thomas never doubted his remaining memories.
They are finally able to see what the world really looks like, how it is after the great catastrophe. The only possible ending for the human race is more destruction; the Flare is uncontrollable, and the resources that are left are being wasted in a cruel project which is far from finding a cure.
The truth is terrifying, and there´s no turning back now. Thomas and his friends are the only hopes, and it will take courage and humility from someone we wouldn´t expect it to come from - to save the human race. And far more than that, I can´t help but wonder: is it possible to find a new beginning for humans, if we still carry the same hearts and desires of power? Would it be a happy ending or just a different part of the cycle?

The Scorch Trials, by James Dashner

Synopsis
Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze wouldn´t mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn´t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross the Scorch - the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has been sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

After swallowing every page of The Maze Runner book 1, it couldn´t be diffetent with The Scorch Trials. James Dashner has an incredible pace of writing that mesmerizes the reader in a way you can´t leave the book before you´re done with it - or until you know there´s a book 2.
Holding the hope that finding the Maze´s exit would be the end of all the Gladers´s suffering wasn´t enough. James Dashner didn´t spare Thomas and his friends on his creativity as a writer. Now the challenges are bigger and deeper, and there´s no rule or no help. The Gladers now are obligated to go through the Scorch and face the worst place on earth to be at - a burned landscape area where danger could come from every direction. Although they had a choice to either go or not to the Scorch, they were promised to be given the cure for the Flare - the awful virus that took control of a great part of the population after the Sun flares burned the earth. The human race is fading and now they can see it with their eyes, and now they have no choice but cooperate with WICKED in order to try to have a "normal" life.
What the reader does not expect to see is the testing of how far a friendship can go. How can you be sure someone is loyal to you when you do not even remember your past? One of the tests the Scorch promotes is about the strength of the Gladers´s friendship, combined with many other peculiarities in order to examine their actions to a bigger purpose. Will all of this effort be worth it?
The author proves again his ability to write in a fast-paced rythm and conquers the reader with it, though sometimes the sequence of events can be overwhelming and lead to a exhaustive reading. Thinking out of the box is still present in book 2, but mostly of all, it makes the public think about how far humans can go in a limited world and their unlimited selfishness. I wonder if all the dystopias aren´t just what the future holds for us. Maybe they are.

The Maze Runner, by James Dashner

Synopsis
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

The Maze Runner was not even a bit a surprise. Compared to Divergent and The Hunger Games, it thrilled me that I would be emerged in the dystopic futuristic society type of reading again, which amazes and always inspires me to think out of the box. The Maze Runner is the kind of book I would say that pushes further my thoughts and ideas.
Mystery I believe is the best word to define this wonderful story. You never now what is to come, what you are supposed to expect, much less do the characters. The very first chapter already presents a mystery: Thomas is being lifted by an elevator and is in total panic. He gets to a glade - the Glade - and realizes his memory got wiped up. He does not remember who he is, where he had come from, or where he is. Nothing seems familiar. Adding more mystery to it, he is pulled out of the elevator box by a bunch of boys of all ages, but all are young like him, and they also do not know a thing about their lives or the purpose of them being there.
The boys have built their own way of living, have created an hierarchy and job functions for each one in the Glade. Thomas soon understands they are surrounded by a maze and that they are expected to find its exit. Also, every month the elevator box goes up with a new boy, exactly thirty days. Although they had been stuck in the Glade for about two years, things start to change after Thomas´s arrival. The next day he gets to the Glade, the box lifts again and a girl shows up - the first girl. She comes in a coma stage and wrapped around her hand there is a piece of paper carrying a message.
The Creators change the course of events in the Glade. The gladers are now forced to find a solution for their situation. But now that things have changed forever, no one knows exactly how to act or what to expect. Still, why are they there for? Some attribute it to Thomas´s coming to the Glade. Everything had changed since then.
Completly praised by the media, The Maze Runner has an enlightening plot, and I shall warn you dear reader, it´s vicious. Getting addicted to enveil mysteries and think out of the box when reflecting about a likely future for the humanity isn´t hard.
I totally recommend this reading to all those who are not frightened to find out the truth.

Four, by Veronica Roth

Synopsis
Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.

Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

It is interesting to know, for those who are fans of Divergent series, how the author had an inicial plan to write Four´s story, instead of Tris´. I believe this book is a great extension for those who are truly fans or just appreciate this series.
The story explores the life Tobias had before he entered the Dauntless faction, and how disgusting it was, given that his father, Marcus, controlled everything he did and made him suffer from being a divergent. As one of the faction leaders, Marcus tried to shape Tobias´s behavior and make his life a hell.
The book is divided into stories which are parts of his life, and the biggest part of the book happens as he is a Dauntless. Dropped inside of the Dauntless world readers are already familiar with from Tris’ initiation, Roth does not waste any time reestablishing the world. Instead, in a condensed space, readers are treated to a glimpse at the life Tobias was desperate to flee and the emotional backlash of his choice to do so. The result is a new appreciation for the harsh exterior Four portrays in Divergent after discovering the pieces of his training he used to build it. The reader can get to know new pieces that complete the story we already know.
The book already counts with extra scenes with Tris; they are cheap and occupied two to three pages, not enriching that much that is promised.
Event though the book "Four" brings many missing pieces to the Divergent story, it leaves the reader wanting more.

A Esperança, por Suzanne Collins

Sinopse
Começou a revolução.

Allegiant, by Veronica Roth

Synopsis
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.
But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

This is the end. This book means to me both the end of a window of thought I have developed and a new beggining for Tri´s world. Big Divergent fans got astonished as they read the conclusion of this thrilling dystopian series. There´s a lot of death reaching  the dearest ones. There´s new information, a whole world discovered beyond the city limits. Beyond the reader´s limits.
After the truth about the city was revealed in the end of Insurgent, Allegiant brings a new reality to be explored. Tris and friends go outside the city just so they can understand the truth and the existence of their city - lasted found out as an experiment.
Allegiant isn´t as close to an action book as Insurgent is. It explores ideologies, genetics, mind, technology and human behavior. There are those who say it hasn´t achieved their expectations in the matter of action, saying it´s too much drama. I guess what they haven´t noticed is that there was so much speed already, seeking for a truth they put their beliefs on. And when you acknowledge a revelation, you´ve got to spend some time until it settles in your mind. It may not be as easy as it seems to realize the life you had and the world you gave everything for wasn´t real, or wasn´t for real.
I was surprised and glad to have the chance to see Tris´s and Tobias´s realtionship grow more mature each page I got to turn. Even thoug they were young, they went through a lot together, and that shows to me that you grow emotionally mature when you get to experience both sides of life with the one you love - the good and the bad. Those moments shape who you are and who you are together.
Roth leaves the reader with an astonishing end, but satisfying. I was afraid that the peace or maybe part of it wouldn´t be achieved once these book series perceives the deep humam nature, and for me humanity wouldn´t be able to reach complete peace, since one is always looking forward to be better than the neighboor. Partial piece is enough for now.
I could list here how many things I learned through this reading, but I think it all consists in how I view myself and mankind. It´ll be different from now on. My fears now belong to my fear landscape and nowhere else. Selflessness became the true bravery. True love is stronger than it haven´t been before.
     Be brave.

Quotes: "People always organize into groups. That´s a fact of our existence."
"A system that relies on a group of uneducated people to do its dirty work without giving them a way to rise is hardly fair."
"Our ability to know about ourselves and the world is what makes us human."
"You don´t believe things because they make your life better, you believe them because they´re true."
"When you control information, or manipulate it, you don´t need force to keep people under your thumb. They stay there willingly."
"And I know, without being told, that´s what love does, when it´s right - it makes you more than you were, more than you thought you could be."
"There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravey involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater."
"Since I was young, I have always known this: Life damages us, every one. We can´t escape that damage."

Insurgent, by Veronica Roth

Synopsis
One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

Read the first book´s review here.

There´s one thing I loved about Insurgent right away: it starts just after the point Divegent ended; it actually seems like the author didn´t even had the thought of creating a trilogy in the beggining, so smooth is the conection between the books. This is an awesome follow-up, so explosive throughout all the pages.
After Tris´s Initiation Ceremony, the world as she knew was never the same. The war was set. The factions got disestablished, and the reader gets into a frenetic pace reading. During a war, we´ve got to choose sides and to make choices - in less than a second - that will affect your life forever. Tris will suffer the loss of many of her friends through Insurgent. The heavy weight she and Tobias are carrying make things get complicated between them.
Insurgent means "rising in active revolt" or "a rebel or a revolutionary". I think it describes really well the purpose of the book: Tris and her friends are rebelling against the system which is tried to be set in this society that is falling apart. I see this book as a good opportunity for the reader to get insider of the faction-based world they live (lived) in, as we can experience how life is like in almost all of the factions headquarters. Every detail here is important for the upcoming book - Allegiant - as it brings answers for the whole mysterious puzzle, mostly after a big truth is revealed at the end of the book, leaving the reader even more anxious for the continuation.
I could say Roth doesn´t hesitate to kill off characters, change the game completely or to recreate the storyline at every turn - you´ve got to be ready for intense emotions.
I couldn´t be more satisfied with the DIvergent series; besides Veronica´s great ability to kill the people you most get attached to, it´s still worth it. The learning I get from a reading is the most important part for me and this series haven´t left me without it not even a moment.

Check out what other readers are saying about Insurgent : here.

Quotes: " Like a wild animal, the truth is too powerful to remain caged."
"The truth has a way of changing a person´s plans."
"Grief is not as heavy as guilt, but it takes more away from you."
"Insurgent. Noun. A person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not necessarily regarded as a belligerent."
"People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them."

Divergent, by Veronica Roth

Synopsis
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

I can´t find a better way to start this review but admitting: This is the second best book I´ve read in my life. Divergent has played a big role on changing my point of view about how to control myself and how I should analyse the world we live in. It was such a great experience to read it. It isn´t just a surprisingly teenager adventure - it goes further than that - it´s about making choices and understanding others.

Beatrice lives in a society which is divided into five factions, each connected to a different value - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). When kids turn sixteen, they´re supposed to take an aptitude test and choose a faction to belong in. Beatrice is naturally from Abnegation, but she isn´t satisfied with the life she has got - the rules she has to follow hide who she really is. And she will make a choice that has the power to change her world - and mainly to change her perspective about herself.
The consequences for the choice she made are tough - Beatrice, now called Tris, needs to go through a competitive and brutal initiation to her faction. She´ll find out about what her biggest fears are and learn how to deal with them. Besides these obstacles, she finds herself drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her.
This thrilling story is set in a futurist  post-apocalypt version of Chicago and takes the reader to an exploration of a clearly controlled society. The system of factions was created in order to prevent humanity from another war. Each individual works to the faction they belong in, and the factions work together as a strategy to survive. The book settles a great contrast to the deep human being wills - it is often called status quo - wealthy, prestige and power. And these three are combined in Divergent, showing how, even in a post-apocalypt world, societies cannot find piece. Someone has to be in power, and the Abnegation faction, known for its selflessness has always occupied the government positions - until the human instinct and attraction for power calls louder.
Tris´s choices need to take into account the fragile world she is living in, besides her family and friends. It isn´t about selflessness anymore. It´s about being brave. Or maybe the two are strictly connected.
There are many reasons this is a great formulated book. One of them is that I could take a lot from it - I got to learn how to deal with my fears and how I should face them. I feel braver after this reading. And that´s what attracts me to a book: not just its power to entertain me, but to make me reflect about my life and the directions it is turning to, and to deeply learn. Learning gets to knowledge, and knowledge is a power no one can take away from me.

Quotes: "Decades ago, our ancestors realized that it is not political ideology, religious belief, race, or nationalism that is to blame for a warring world. Rather, they determined that it was the fault of human personality - of humankind´s inclination toward evil, in whatever form that is. They divided into factions that sought to eradicate those qualities they believed responsible for the world´s disarray."

"In our factions, we find meaning, we find purpose, we find love."
"My father says that those who want power and get it live in terror of losing it. That´s why we have to give power to those who do not want it."
"Intentios are the only thing they care about. They try to make you think they care about what you do, but they don´t. They don´t want you to act a certain way. They want you to think a certain way. So you´re easy to understand. So you won´t pose a threat to them."

Extras, by Scott Westerfeld

                                              Synopsis
Extras, the final book in the Uglies series, is set a couple of years after the “mind-rain,” a few earth-shattering months in which the whole world woke up. The cure has spread from city to city, and the pretty regime that kept humanity in a state of bubbleheadedness has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers have been unleashed upon the world. Culture is splintering, the cities becoming radically different from each other as each makes its own way into this strange and unpredictable future . . .
One of the features of the new world is that everyone has a "feed," which is basically their own blog/myspace/tv channel. The ratings of your feed (combined with how much the city interface overhears people talking about you) determines your social status--so everyone knows at all times how famous they are.
As Scott Westerfeld explored the themes of extreme beauty in the first three Uglies books, now he takes on the world's obsession with fame and popularity. And how anyone can be an instant celebrity.

"To everyone who wrote to me to reveal the secret definition of the word "trilogy"" - And that's how Scott Westerfeld started "Extras", which was not planned in the beginning of the Uglies series. I like to say that "Extras" is an extension of Tally's world, a glimpse of the future that conquered the fans and convinced Westerfeld to write more about it.
I think "Extras" is more for the reader who is a super fan of the Uglies series and loves futuristic backgrounds. The story is farther in the future of Tally, deals with a lot of technology, human advancements, hoverboards, face ranks in your eyes, hovercams....
The main character this time is a fifteen-year-old girl called Aya who lives in the future Japan, and at her city, popularity and fame make everything keep going. I admit that the story gets a little insistent about this point - the main character's obsession for fame sometimes gets exhausting.
After Tally Youngblood put down the Uglies/Pretties/Specials system, people were free to think and got a little too crazy in some cases. All kinds of surge were created and technology for fun. Where Aya lives, what we call money nowadays would be their merits and reputation ranks that they get from doing their assigned jobs and getting popular. If they kept the city going just by lighting up people's imagination and creativity, they got rewards such as good places to live, clothes...It is just a different system of a working Society, which I don't have anything against, but became a pretty insisting subject throughout the story.
Tally Youngblood has an appearance in the middle of the book; by the time she put down the old system, she became really famous, and some people even cult her - which I think was a little exaggeration from the author, although she did a great work for the humanity.
"Extras" is more of a deeper looking into this futuristic world, adventure, but I wouldn't hold expectations about it.

Quotes: " These days "pretty" meant whatever got you noticed"

" From now on, merits and face ranks would decide who got the best mansions, the most carbon emissions, the biggest wall allowances. Merits were for doctors, teachers, wardens, all the way down to littlies doing school work and their chores - everyone who kept the city going, as determined by the Good Citizen Comittee."

"Once you'd told yourself a story enough times, it was so easy to keep on believing it."
